WALTZ

History Style & Characteristics Example Music
The waltz came from the country folk dances of Bavaria more than 400 years ago and was introduced to "high society" England in 1812. In 1840 it was considered the most popular dance in America. The tempo played in the 1880's was more of a medium tempo (compared to the fast Viennese waltz) and in 1920's came the slow waltz.

A graceful and smooth dance; Waltz is the epitome of Ballroom dancing. Waltz is characterized by a smooth and consistent "Rise and Fall" in the dancers movements. Steps are large to increase movement and flow of the dance, which travels counter-clockwise around the dance floor. Waltz is danced to music in 3/4 time (i.e. 3 beats in each bar of music).
